Zulekha Hospital in Sharjah has been honored with being the very first private hospital in the United Arab Emirates that has been certified by the WHO and UNICEF with the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI). This Baby-friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) had been launched by the WHO and the UNICEF in the year 1991. The initiative was a global effort for implementing practices which protect, support and promote breastfeeding.

As Sharjah was based out of the cities that were Baby-friendly and also in line with the dream of the Founder and Chairperson Dr. Zulekha Daud, this private hospital greatly advocates breastfeeding and also imparts education and awareness regarding breastfeeding to mothers that are expecting and also the community at large. Doctors and also nurses have been encouraged to go through the Lactation Consultant Training Program and currently the hospital has on board, 7 Lactation Consultants who are providing free education as well as guidance to the mothers round the clock.

In partnership with the Sharjah Baby Friendly City as well as the Breastfeeding Friends Society, Dr. Zulekha’s Hospital takes many other initiatives for promoting Breastfeeding in the United Arab Emirates. For ensuring continued education and awareness to masses on this important aspect, the hospital holds many activities within their hospital for the staff, partners as well as their families. 20 hours of staff education on the topic of breastfeeding has been given to the workers that are in direct contact with the babies and their mothers. These include the doctors, the nurses, physiotherapists, pharmacists and dieticians. Other than the clinical staff, all the non-clinical staff such as the front office and the back office, the housekeeping, cashiers, health care assistants, maintenance, security, and kitchen staff have been given awareness sessions on breastfeeding regularly for promoting the cause.
