Inconvenience and frustration are at bay for the public as a result of the shortage of hydrogen stations. This means that people with hydrogen-run vehicles will have to go to faraway places to fill up their car tanks. But even if they reach the stations, they’ll have to wait for hours for it to be their turn in the long line of other hydrogen vehicle owners.
The government has been stalling building these stations because of the public safety issues.
These concerns arose when one of the hydrogen tanks blew up back in May in the Gangwon Province, injuring eight people. These concerns were fueled by another hydrogen station explosion in Norway in June, injuring two more people.
Concerns of the Gangneung residents caused them to rebel against the government’s plans to build a fueling at an already announced location. The authority reacted accordingly and started searching for another ideal location.
The ministry’s division said that they are working with the Korean government and other authorities to build a hydrogen fueling station as soon as they can to minimize people’s inconvenience of traveling far to refill their cars. They also talked about launching these plants in Chuncheon, Wonju, and Gangneung till June 2020.
However, many of the pre-planned stations that were to be completed this year, have been postponed to next year because of public concerns. An official said that the safety of the public is more valuable than building the plants quickly.
Korea currently has only 28 hydrogen fueling stations across the country. However, not all of them are public. Only 11 out of 28 can be used by the public, while the rest of them are for experimenting, private cars, and only a few buses.
The government is working day and night to make it safe and easy for its people to use hydrogen fueling stations. The people are in good hopes.
